What do MERV filter ratings mean?
MERV rates how well a filter captures particles, from about 1 to 16 — higher catches smaller particles. For most homes a MERV 8–13 filter balances clean air with airflow. Too high a MERV in a system not built for it can choke airflow and strain the blower.
How to read the number
- MERV 1–4: basic, protects the equipment but catches little.
- MERV 8–11: a good home range — captures dust, pollen and mold spores.
- MERV 12–13: finer filtration for allergy-sensitive homes, if the system can handle it.
- MERV 14+: hospital-grade; usually needs equipment designed for the higher resistance.
Higher isn't always better
A filter that's too restrictive for your system reduces airflow, which can freeze the coil and overwork the blower — the opposite of what you want. Matching filter to system, and changing it on schedule, matters more than chasing the biggest number.
Common questions
What MERV rating should I use at home?
MERV 8–13 suits most homes — enough to capture dust, pollen and spores without starving airflow. If someone has allergies, the higher end helps, provided your system is rated for it.
How we build this guidance
This guide is written and reviewed by the Lazarine AC team — a local heating, cooling and electrical company serving Fort Bend County since 2000. It reflects how we actually diagnose and quote work here, not generic national copy. It's general information, not a substitute for an on-site diagnosis of your specific system.
