Indoor Air Quality guides
Humidity, filtration, UV and duct sealing — why Gulf-Coast humidity works your system harder and what actually helps.
- How it works Why is my home humid even with the AC running? An AC removes humidity only while it runs long enough to pull moisture off the coil. In Fort Bend's Gulf-Coast humidity, an oversized unit that short-cycles cools fast but never dehumidifies. Right-sizing, clean coils, or a dedicated dehumidifier are the real fixes.
- How it works What does a whole-home air purifier do? A whole-home air purifier installs in your ductwork and treats the air the whole system moves — reducing dust, pollen, and other particles throughout the house. Unlike a portable unit that cleans one room, it works everywhere your HVAC does, every time it runs.
- Terms & basics What do MERV filter ratings mean? MERV rates how well a filter captures particles, from about 1 to 16 — higher catches smaller particles. For most homes a MERV 8–13 filter balances clean air with airflow. Too high a MERV in a system not built for it can choke airflow and strain the blower.
- How it works What do UV lights do in an HVAC system? A UV light installed at the evaporator coil helps keep mold and biofilm from growing on the cool, damp coil surface — a real problem in Gulf-Coast humidity. It keeps the coil cleaner and airflow better; it is not a whole-house air sterilizer.
- Repair or replace What does duct sealing do? Duct sealing closes the gaps and leaks where conditioned air escapes before it reaches your rooms — often into a hot attic. Sealing them restores airflow to the far rooms, cuts wasted energy, and can reduce the dust and humidity pulled in through the leaks.
