What is a ductless mini-split?
A ductless mini-split is a heat pump that skips the ductwork: an outdoor unit connects to one or more wall or ceiling indoor heads by a small refrigerant line. Each head cools and heats its own zone, which is ideal for additions, garages and rooms central air can't reach.
Where mini-splits shine
- A room addition, sunroom or garage the existing ducts don't serve
- A home with no ductwork, or ducts too damaged to reuse
- Rooms that are always too hot or too cold — a mini-split zone gives them their own thermostat
- Trimming energy use by conditioning only the rooms in use
Central AC vs. ductless
Central AC cools the whole house through ducts from one system; a mini-split conditions specific zones directly. Central is usually the better fit when good ductwork already exists; ductless wins when adding ducts would be expensive or impossible, or when you want room-by-room control.
Common questions
Can a mini-split heat as well as cool?
Yes — a ductless mini-split is a heat pump, so it both cools in summer and heats in winter, which suits Fort Bend's mild cold season.
How we build this guidance
This guide is written and reviewed by the Lazarine AC team — a local heating, cooling and electrical company serving Fort Bend County since 2000. It reflects how we actually diagnose and quote work here, not generic national copy. It's general information, not a substitute for an on-site diagnosis of your specific system.
